Jan Arnold: Your Nails Are The Ultimate Fashion Accessory
August 29, 2007

Creative Nail by Design started doing fashion shows about 5 or 6 years ago, and now it includes Louis Vuitton and Alexander Mc Queen. “It is all about expression and imagination and creativity”, says co-founder Jan Arnold.

What role do nails have in fashion today?
Nails are viewed as a fashion accessory, and you have 10 opportunities to be creative, to bring colors and we can also do the toes. Plus you don’t have to be any special size to have amazing nails. Every single woman can look gorgeous if you have your hair and nails done. Beautiful nails give you confidence and fun.

How do you do them, how long does it take to finish them?
We use different materials, liquid and powder and gems. For us it’s not difficult, the designer explains to us his vision and the theme, their colors. We even see the shoes, the fabric, and this is our inspiration for creating a nail style that would either match or complement or contrast the look. It depends on what the designers imagine.

Do we still have to match nails and toenails?
We have seen a lot of patterns in fashion that become repetitious. The lace, or black and white, you see them on shoes, on the jacket, on the fabric.. so yes, it’s better to match fingers and toes. It’s about a monochromatic look. Maybe we could go a little paler on the finger but we have to keep it in the same colour range.

Long or short?
If you choose the pale colour, like icy pale pink, I would go longer, a medium shape, in an almond shape. What that shape does in a pale color or even white nail with gold shimmer is what the stilettos do to your legs. It gives thinness and elongation. If you go for a passionate hot pink, then a softer oval and shorter is better. The darker the color the shorter the nails, and the lighter the longer and more pointy.

What’s the best way to take care of our hands?
Regular manicures, weekly manicures if you have natural nails. If not, go every 2 weeks, and have monthly pedicures. Use a good oil on the nails every night before bed to protect your nails, we have one with jojoba oil and vitamin E, this makes the nails tough and resilient as opposed to drying it and make it crack. Also use a fantastic hand lotion with ceramides with light and penetrating ingredients, but not too heavy, you want one to nurture the skin on your hands.

I have never done enhancements, but I hear that it ruins nails When you do enhancements, sometimes you ruin the nails. How can we prevent that?
If it’s done correctly by a professional, the nail is never destroyed. The only thing that ruins the nail is a file. Clean the nails, have it done by a professional, go in for regular maintenance, and if you have them removed, soak them, and they would be in a perfect shape. Look for master technician, master means they have went through the education process.
