Hayat Ammouri Interviews Marc Jacobs for Dots |
What do you think a perfume does to a woman?
It’s all in the senses. I am a very visual person, but of course I am also seduced by smell, by sound, by touch.. These are all choices; it’s very human that people want to feel some way, look a certain way, and smell a certain way…. Doing shoes, bags, collections, it’s all opportunities to design; it’s just another vehicle for entertaining or appealing to a sense.
Does a fragrance transform a woman?
It doesn’t transform a woman. A person makes choices, to wear perfume, not to wear a perfume; cosmetics, their hair, clothing, shoes. They are not necessities, these are luxuries. It’s a choice. People could indulge with one choice or many choices. They could indulge themselves and express themselves with choices, and perfumes is one of the choices they make on a daily basis.
We live in a different world today. In the past, people would go to Paris and bring back French perfumes. But now, French perfumes are everywhere. There isn’t the same exclusivity, people want something tangible. Maybe if the designer has an identity, fragrance is an extension of what they believe and maybe it’s something more available to many people in some ways.
Why did you choose “Dots”?
I always liked round shapes, round letters, and polka dots.. It’s infinite. There is no end.. It has a kind of spirit.. There is a sort of charm.. The word is round…
How did you choose the model for Dots?
I chose her for her big eyes, and I think she represented the fragrance really well.
What does a perfume mean to you?
It’s a wonderful vehicle to reach more people, it’s more accessible. You don’t have to be a certain height to wear a fragrance, and you can change your fragrance easily.. Many people can take pleasure from it. For me it’s just another opportunity to create something, and I also think it’s very symbolic. Every designer has a fragrance, so it made me feel like I am a real designer now. It’s true. From the 1st fragrance, years ago, when my name was on a bottle of perfume, I thought I made it.
